Once again we delve deep into myspace’s music section to showcase artists you may not have heard of but ought to check out on Rupert Murdoch’s baby. here we go:
WordBurglar
Self described as having “more lines than cokeheads playing tetris”, WordBurglar is the definition of viable nerdcore. The genre itself is one that an so easily be stretched thin or worn out, in sounding campy or tired, but this dude is some of the best I’ve ever heard. He appeared in my area recently at Nerdapalooza, but he hails from Canada. You could compare his flow to Buck 65, but I feel like that’s unfair seeing as they share a nationality. I personally would say he’s got beats like a very early, less abstract sample-ridden MF DOOM, and his flow somewhere around the Beastie Boys and MC Chris (sorry I know that last part sounds kind of vague). I would also highly recommend you download the mixtape he’s featured on from Hand’Solo records which you can grab here, it’s awesome. I know there are dozens of thousands of internet mixtapes floating around, but I give this one my highest recommendation.
Champagne Champagne
Another hip hop entry on the roundup for today, is Champagne Champagne. Rising from the ashes of the Blood Brothers (one of my favorite bands in high school), CC is Mark Gajadhar (former drummer) and Pearl Dragon (hip hop guru that opened for Spank Rock and makes crazy beats). Gaja describes their music as “music that makes them feel good” and that’s “the only goal of the group”. I was a huge BB fan when I was younger, and now that I’ve gotten a little bit older and enjoy hip hop/electro much more than I used to, I’m glad to see that I can get my fix of both. Can’t wait to hear a full length from these guys.

The Dutchess and the Duke
I was born in the eighties, so I missed the flowery sixties folk vibe entirely. I’ve never been a huge fan of it, and I feel like that is mostly because what I have heard from the genre I passed on because it was presented to me by lame aging hippies and pretentious mediocre imitators. Happy to say that this group certainly captures the vibe of the movement, but adds newer production techniques, and still manages to sound like something you might yank out of a dusty crate in someone’s basement. People who like their music slower and heartfelt would do well to check out this band. They just put out a record on July 8th, and if you like what you heard on their site you can snag it here.

The Seedy Seeds
On the other side of folk, there’s projects like the Blow. People passionate about emotional music and electronic sounds make some of the best music I’ve ever heard, and I could easily see this band putting out an amazing record in the next year or two. I found these guys in a playlist on Gregory and the Hawk’s myspace, so fans of GATH should note what off the bat sort of sounds and atmosphere to expect. On their myspace they claim to make “dancy pop that is the best music ever” and I agree.
Megafaun
Out of Durham, NC we present to you Megafaun. With all of the artists singing folk songs these days it’s hard to pick and choose, but here’s a group we think stands heads above the rest. Check ‘em out on myspace, buy their music, see their shows! I’m hoping they come to Florida sooner or later. Don’t believe me? Watch the video below.
“I’m Only Sleeping cover (live)”
Visit us again next week, when we’ll have scores of new bands for you to lend an ear to. If you play music you think we would like, or someone you know does, drop us a line at thenexttolastmohican’s inbox, we look forward to hearing from you soon. If your group doesn’t appear in the round up, we either don’t really think your music is right for us (sorry, it happens) or we’re going to throw you into a future post. We do listen to every submission! You can also hit us up on myspace here and here. Have a great rest of the week.
